Summary
Hermione had never had much patience for Tom Riddle.
Riddle was a model student, ostensibly, and most everyone could vouch for him being the nicest Slytherin that they knew, but Hermione had always felt that his polite demeanor was rather insincere. How nice could he be, really, if he cornered his friends in dodgy alleys and caused them inexplicable pain?
(Or, Hermione follows the Muggle admonition that she keep her enemies closer a little too strictly to the letter.)

Summary
His campaigns have been verging into the Muggle world. He asks Severus for names of Muggleborns that are stated through the registrar. Dumbledore, with some reluctance offers the name of one. One random sacrifice for the greater good.
Well, so Dumbledore thinks. So, the Dark Lord thinks too. The family consist of two mild-mannered dentists. Seeming ill-equipped to defend their daughter but what they do not know is that the father is the third son of a muggle lord and has a gun license. He uses it to defend his family by not going down without a fight. The father gets in the way of an AK sent his daughter’s way, the spell rebounds and hits the wall instead.
Bellatrix, the sender of the spell, is ultimately punished for her failure of killing a two-year-old by ordering a blood adoption: Bellatrix and Rodolphus have to now look after the child they failed to kill. They are told to specifically teach her the pureblood ways, they are sworn off missions until the child has gone to Hogwarts.
The problem is that Bella truly falls for her adopted daughter; as does a returned Dark Lord 14 years later!
