Umeko swallowed his disappointment and it tasted like copper. “I’m sorry, Grandfather.”
He looked down on her at her position on the ground, and she felt so lowly. Even more pathetic and sad than when she whispered empty compliments to Ino, when Shikamaru rejected her.
Her grandfather started walking away, and said into the quiet of the big lonely house, “I gave you your tools. Now use them.”

The sky is blue, the stars are pretty, and Haruno Sakura cannot stand losing. They are all facts of life, ingrained into the very fabric of reality.
However, her current teammates have put that resolve to the test. Unbeknownst to her, Uzumaki Naruto is the Kyuubi-Jinchuuriki, and Uchiha Sasuke is not only the last Uchiha with the coveted Sharingan but is also a prodigy to boot. They are, without a doubt, the best. No one can ever hope to compete with Naruto with Chakra Capacity or Sasuke-kun with Dojutsu. To truly be the best at something, there are some things you just have to be born with, and she is realising that's a fact of life too.
However, Sakura doesn't have to be the best to compete. She doesn't have to be the greatest to not lose. and she won't lose to them. Let them have their tailed beasts and sharingans...she will take everything else.
After all, 'Quantity over quality' is how the saying goes...right?
Or: A rewrite of Naruto where the story stays (mostly) the same, but Sakura fights to truly earn her place as part of the main trio. After all, Haruno Sakura will do everything she possibly can before she ever falls behind.
