There was something bubbling in her throat, and she wasn’t sure if it was a scream or a laugh or if she was going to be sick. Is this some sort of sick joke? Some sort of cruel prank set on her by the universe. That had to be it. Was the past year not suffering enough? Now she is forced to see him. She couldn’t stay out here all night. Not when the rain was beginning to chill her to the bone and her hair was going to be a sopping wet mess for the rest of the night. But her body didn’t want to move. Her muscles weren’t reacting, her brain disconnected from the rest of her.

Argyle stared at him, first his lips were pursed, and his brows creased in the middle as he mulled over the odd proposition that Steve had just given him. Steve was standing, feeling almost out of breath before realizing he was holding it. Something was telling him he was running out of time. Running out of chances. Then, slowly, the smile spread across Argyle’s lips, loosening something in Steve’s chest.

Two people who weren’t close, not really, and probably never would be due to conflicting personalities are brought together by one person. One shining light in the otherwise darkened world between them, the wild protective force that would bring the two together on more than one occasion. That beautiful person was entirely too bright for the world, snuffed out before their time and it left two people to pick up the pieces. Left standing, together, in the aftermath of their worst personal tragedy, unsure of how to navigate the world. So, naturally, they sought each other’s company. Each other’s comfort. Any shred of the light they once had would be in the other person, not sought for but found.

It felt like they were driving into the sun, bright and insufferably hot. That’s how it felt in California. Sure, there were less than sunny days, there were days filled with clouds and rain, but they were far and few between the sunshine. He always felt like he was constantly getting sunburned and there was something in his skin that kept him from tanning. Always red, always flushed, always uncomfortable. He has reason to be, as Freeza murdered his entire family while he watched.
