Summary
Stevie Rogers is born and raised female, though she's a complete tomboy, which is how she ends up best friends with Bucky Barnes. Some point just before the war, Bucky gets his shit together and realises that everything he wants in a woman he's already got, in the shape of his best friend. They're married before Bucky enlists.
Stevie wants to help with the war effort, and keeps trying to join the WAACs, but keeps being rejected. But Dr Erskine needs a test subject for his serum, and thinks that part of the problem before was using a male rather than a female subject (Agent Carter would be an excellent choice, but she's vetoed as being too valuable to risk).
Stevie goes into the machine skinny and female, and comes out of it muscular and apparently male. But she's actually got everything, though she's ordered never to tell anyone this, and present herself as fully male (and always fully male).
Go anywhere with this, especially the body dysmorphia/conception of self and gender aspects. Though I would love that Bucky has always been the sort of guy who sometimes picked up guys as well as girls, and is actually as taken with the new Stevie as the old one.
