Summary
S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't expect to find Captain America frozen in ice. They didn't expect him to be so disgruntled and bitter. Sure, they knew he'd be sad over missing out his life in the past, but there was sadness and then there was Steve Rogers plummeting his fists through a dozen punching bags a day. It was...terrifying and quite frankly, his anger was putting a damper on S.H.I.E.L.D.s plans. They had wars to stop, people to save and peace to upkeep.
So naturally, they send in one of their best - the ex-Russian spy turned S.H.I.E.L.D agent. Nothing could really go wrong, right?
It's not like the infamous Black Widow would ever be susceptible to love and the great Captain America would never fall for someone like her.
Natasha Romanoff though? She might. And Steve Rogers? He definitely would.

“That’s not Steve.” She’s shaking, pacing back and forth and it’s the first time Tony sees her so distraught. She’s angry, he can tell that much. “I-I don’t know what the hell that is,” her bottom lip trembles, “but that’s not Steve.”
It couldn’t be. He had his eyes – the exact colour of them – and his face, but it wasn’t Steve. It couldn’t be – because she had personally scattered his ashes over the lake next to the underground tower.
So, while the man standing in the lab looked like an exact replica of Steve, she knew it wasn’t him. No matter how quickly her heart fluttered or how hopeful she had managed to be in the few seconds she saw him.
“You’re right,” Tony agrees, and his voice is soft, hesitant, “he’s not. He goes by Nomad, but he’s a Steve, and,” he sighs, almost pleading with her to accept what was happening, “it’s the best we’ve got.”
In which the Avengers search through the universes to find someone to help them fight their battles after the Winter Soldier kills Steve Rogers.

It was his fault, really. He should've told his ma that they weren't together anymore, that they had been separated for nearly half a year.

And now it was too late to cancel the trip and get a refund.
After staying in the office with Natasha - hours after closing to meet a deadline, the two tickets to the resort in Mexico seemed like a ticket to heaven. He hadn't gone on a vacation in years and a full week away from contracts and work seemed like a great idea.
The look on Natasha's face after they finished seemed that she needed the break just as much as he did.
So, Steve's grand idea was to invite her as his plus one and at first, everything was great. Then they arrived at the resort and he found that the trip was definitely made for couples on their honeymoon.
