    Summary

“You wrote to me.” It’s not a question.

“Yeah, I – er, I mean. No.” The letters on the bed glare up at him, shaking their head in their obviousness.

“Which is it?” Will asks, and he’s nervous. Is he nervous? Mike wonders suddenly, because if anything, the boy looks fucking cocksure right now, with that half-hidden sort of grin at the corner of his mouth. And Mike is not turned on by it at all. Obviously. Because he is terrified.

“I wrote them, I just er, I never sent them.”

“No shit,” Will laughs, openly this time, taking a step closer to the bed. Mike forgets how to breathe. He can smell the fucking rain now, mixed with the scent of Will’s skin, and his shampoo, and the same fucking laundry detergent Joyce has used since they were in kindergarden. And Mike knows, with absolute certainty, he’s about to pass out.

    Summary

“Look,” Will says, turning fully on the pallet to face Mike, one hand reaching down for the rough wood to find purchase and ground him. “Do you-, do you want to show me. Like-, like want to practice?”

Mike’s eyes widen but he doesn't say anything.

“Sorry, stupid idea, just wanted to help.” Will is trying to gather the words back up from the air between them and into his mouth.

“I never thought it was stupid.” Mike says, so quietly it's not much more than an exhale. “I suggested it first.” He adds, like it's a secret.

Will grips the pallet harder. “Show me. I really do want to help.”

Mike bites his lip a sec, and Will thinks he's going to say no, but then Mike's darting forward and pressing his lips firm and quick against Will’s. It's barely a kiss. Not romantic. Not enough to leave a scar. Will bleeds anyway.

    Summary

Holy shit, Will thinks. Holy shit, that’s Mike Wheeler.

Dead center stage, his long fingers plucking expertly at a deep blue electric guitar, is a living ghost of Will’s desperately buried past. The central figure of his best childhood memories and worst adolescent shames, the boy he thought he’d left behind for good, the first and only person he’d ever really been in love with. Mike.

Chicago, 1993. Will is working as an illustrator, back in the Midwest for the first time since he left at 14. Mike is the frontman of an up-and-coming alt rock band he started with his college friends. Through sheer luck, their paths cross, and everything they ever left unsaid comes bubbling back to the surface.

    Summary

“What are you? A third grader? What the fuck is this?” Eddie asks. He looks at Richie, confused.

“A list of fun stuff to do, duh. Can’t you read? I thought you were studying creative writing.” Eddie glares at Richie, who raises his hands in surrender as he chuckles. “Okay, okay. Hear me out. Your professor tells you to write what you know, and you said you don’t know anything. Well, sugar, here’s your opportunity to learn something about yourself.”

Dumbfounded, Eddie cannot tear his eyes away from Richie, his mouth agape. “You’re insane,” Eddie says.

    “And proud,” Richie replies.

    ...

In which Eddie Kaspbrak is a writer with no ideas, and Richie Tozier is a coffee shop employee bursting with creativity.

    Summary

Richie was not soft, or sweet. He didn’t wear golden ankle bracelets that flashed in the sun when he walked. But he was brave, and he was kind, beneath all his bullshit. He was funny as hell when he wasn’t trying too hard (although Eddie would never admit it). He didn’t make Eddie feel like he was floating on a bed of fuzzy feelings, or whatever.

He made Eddie feel alive, like a spark that just needed to be lit into a flame. He made Eddie want to be more like him — brave, and brash, and not giving a fuck what anyone thinks. He was absolutely infuriating, but in the best way.

And he gave Eddie those goddamn butterflies every time.

So, in essence, that was The Richie Problem.

    Love.

(the worst disease of them all.)
