Harry did not know this and would not know this until Mrs. Granger mentioned it casually over a Christmas dinner years and years later-- but she and Mr. Granger reported the Dursleys for child abuse and neglect, over and over.
The reports got lost-- minds scrubbed down, papers vanished-- but they kept calling in reports. They considered kidnapping. They couldn't imagine why the wizarding world might want to keep their chosen one somewhere so toxic, why they might want to keep this underfed child and his messy hair with those people.
"My mother left me a blood protection spell," said Harry, whose scar had not ached in years. He poked at his mashed potatoes under the focused attention of Mrs. Granger's stern little forehead wrinkle. "I had to live with family, blood family."
"Then they should have made them treat you right," Mrs. Granger said, as though it was that simple.
Mr. Granger gave Harry another helping of peas.

In the present, he began to draw. Slowly, carefully, each mark as perfect and exact as he could see it in his mind.
Until there, on the piece of paper, written in the fine black ink, a perfect match to what he saw in his mind. A perfect match to what was once on his wrist.
He held it out to Yelena, watched her as she took it, her eyes scanning it.
Her face went pale, lost all its color.
She lifted her eyes to his.
“Does it say Yelena?” he asked, uneasy by her expression, his stomach twisting in knots.
“No.” She shook her head, blond braid swinging. “It says Natalia.”

An unscheduled visit from the head of the Presidential Detail is never a good sign, and before Josh even knows what this is about, his blood runs cold.
“There’s been an accident,” Ron informs them, and that’s all it takes to set off a dull ringing in Josh’s ears; it reminds him of the sound of his pager beeping on a day almost two years ago, delivering similarly cryptic and terrifying news.
A minor car accident brings up big feelings.

Josh cracks the door open.
Donna is sprawled out like a starfish on the queen-sized guest bed. The quilt is pulled up to about her waist, but her torso and arms are uncovered, revealing her red and white long-sleeved thermal Christmas pajamas. Her hair is a mess, splayed out all over the pillows, her cheeks all red. She has her fuzzy purple eye mask on and she groans as Josh enters the dark bedroom, his arms laden with provisions.
It’s terrible that she feels bad, it is, but she’s so cute right now that Josh can hardly help but grin.
When everyone catches a bug during Bartlet Family Christmas, Josh takes care of Donna.

‘I thought November 6th.’
She makes her selection from the bag after several seconds of contemplation and raises her eyebrows at him. ‘You’re counting the first time we slept together?’
‘Yeah, I—’ He breaks off, explaining hastily, ‘Not—not in a—a lecherous way; it was just, y’know. It seemed—obvious.’
Her expression is wry as she pops the chip in her mouth. ‘I’ll bet it did.’
‘It was a very special night!’ he exclaims, a little high-pitched.
