“I want to learn your cultivation techniques,” Qiu Congxue repeats in exactly the same tone. “The art of plucking and replenishing. Dual cultivation. Sexual—”
“Yes, yes, okay, I get it!” Shu Yanyan suddenly feels underdressed for this conversation. She’s just come from a session with Helian Chu (who’s been trying his best to memorize poetry, poor thing; it’s sweet, but he’s terrible at it), and her current outfit could best be described as “a few scraps of lilac ribbon covering all the important parts”. She pulls a pure white robe from her storage space and throws it on, but Qiu Congxue’s eyes remain fixed on her—well, on her fucking boobs, Protector Qiu, where are you looking!!! She draws the robe tighter around herself, glaring, but Qiu Congxue doesn’t even seem to register her annoyance.
“Mine are smaller than that,” Qiu Congxue remarks, still staring at her chest. “Will they grow if I dual cultivate? That would be terribly inconvenient.”

I’d been a serious student of literature for four years at that point, a serious student of queer theory for none, and the only real kinship we had was that I myself was Chinese, used to being the only Asian in the department. The thinking was that I, being Chinese, would be naturally inclined towards her, and his favorite graduate students would be saved the trial. Moreover, I was the only one who was truly fluent in Chinese.
I think the expectation was that I would write a completely different thesis, the sort of vaguely revisionist thing that sounded better in summary, updating the canon and all that. It would look good for me, and save everyone the trouble of writing about the Regret of Chunshan, which was unfashionable at the time.
Or, the story of Binghe Luo's PhD under Dr. Christine Qingqiu Shen, professor of East Asian Languages and Culture.
