His stomach drops. He's suddenly not hungry anymore. He doesn't want to think about it. So he doesn’t. Doesn’t read the messages, just turns on Do Not Disturb and lets the device thunk against his sternum.
It’s past eight in the morning, which means he slept through Player’s nightly visit. Which means that it’s too late to pretend this never happened.

Each step jostles Player, and he tries to ignore the way that their hands grip tighter and tighter around him. The sky is vaguely cloudy, which provides some relief from the setting sun. However, it cannot protect him from the dry air burning his lungs, threatening to choke him from the inside out.
