Summary
Ilsa digs her gun out of the bottom drawer of a dresser in a room she hardly ever enters one night, disassembles it and lays it all out on her kitchen countertop. That first night, it takes her a minute and twenty-seven seconds to reassemble it. Over the next two days, she gets the time down to forty seconds. More time passes—twenty-three seconds. More time—fifteen.
She starts to wonder if she can make other things out of the parts; tools, decorations, practical, simple objects that have nothing to do with the original item. But as Ilsa gets more and more familiar with the individual parts, she realizes that there isn’t really anything she can rebuild them into other than a gun.
Maybe it serves as some analogy for her life. Discarded, taken apart. She reassembles the gun in eleven seconds and realizes a gun is all it was ever meant to be.

Summary
He’ll get over it eventually. He comes close, in between one moment and the next, or he at least convinces himself he does. But then he looks back in his notes about the Forum and spots a pair of Chanel flats on someone’s feet in the streets and he’s right back where he started, thinking it might take him longer to get over it than it ever did to build the city he’s currently in.

Summary
The first time Ilsa meets Ethan Hunt, he is unconscious. She knows everything about him—she knows nothing. She knows of Captain Hunt, NASA’s best test pilot, top of his engineering class. She knows him by the younger face she’s seen in old files, his statistics, his records. She doesn’t know the man slumped in the cold metal chair in the ground level of the NASA base, with soft brown hair that tickles the nape of his neck and rough hands. She’s only ever seen his two-dimensional form in uniforms and flight suits, not the living and breathing man in a faded sweatshirt and dusty cargo pants and a thick corduroy jacket.

Summary
As Ethan drowns, he thinks of many things. It ranges from some garbled imitation of this water is so fucking cold to a long buried memory of his mother to his hastily improvised wedding in a hospital. He thinks of watching Titanic with Julia and blinking away tears during the end credits before she can see them. He thinks of holding Benji and Luther, the familiar smells of both of them.

Summary
As much as his nightmares plague him, he considers closing his eyes and going back to sleep now because they’re the only way he can see her properly, even if it is usually her lying on the ground with a knife stuck in her. He can visualize her when he’s awake but after everything, he can’t quite properly recreate her mannerisms or the exact cadence of her voice. She’s still achingly familiar to him, yet long-bottled grief has slowly eroded his idea of her. The nightmares, the ones where she dies, the ones where she kills him, the ones where he is never able to save her, that’s all he has left of her.

Summary
Heaven is an Italian hospital.
At least, that's what she thinks when some unseen force peels her eyelids apart, forcing her to take in the sounds of beeping machinery, bright white lights, people whispering and shouting in animated Italian. She's in a bed that's far too soft for her liking, and the frequency of the beeps speeds up unbearably as her heart rate rises. A nurse walks in, his lips pressed into a thin, unforgiving line. There's a doctor who follows him in, and she's speaking loudly enough that Ilsa can catch a few phrases, but not many. Her Italian is not quite as good as her mastery of other languages, but she thinks she hears "no record of her anywhere" and "missed everything important" and she realizes with a touch of horror that heaven is not an Italian hospital and she can't speak on it anyway because she most certainly isn't in heaven and is somehow not in hell either.

Summary
And then she dreams of Zuko, of getting to him too late. Murmured words too quiet to decipher, amber eyes going glassy, star-shaped wound hot to the touch.
She doesn't wake with shaking breaths or with fingers clutching at the sheets; she doesn't wake with a pained yelp, or even with tears on her eyes. No, all she has in the wake of her nightmares is the dull, hazy silence of morning. Katara opens her eyes without movement after nightmares, staring up at the ceiling with her heart pounding so hard that it hurts, but it never shows on her face. Even alone, she can't seem to shed the mask of normalcy, of passive contentment.
Katara is glad that her dreams are infrequent, to put things simply. She has enough to worry about without them.
