All of Max's life fit more than comfortably in one duffle bag which was presently slung over his shoulder. There he was, standing awkwardly outside of Richie’s apartment building, smoking a cigarette and waiting for the man to come down to the lobby to meet him. He could've waited inside but he'd just felt so out of place it made his skin crawl. So, he just resorted to his tried and true fallback plan for escaping situations like that.

After Max’s attempt and beyond unexpected reunion with Richie, he doesn’t have much of a choice about moving in with his past victim. All he wants to do is lay down and die, give up and let the guilt swallow him whole, but he can’t. For some reason, Richie wants him to live; Max owes it to him to at least try.
Max doesn’t believe he can.
Even if he’s wrong, even if he can turn his life around, does he deserve that second chance?

Max stood in the locker room, staring at his phone. It was his dad, surely being an asshole like always.
Practice was over, meaning Max had to go home. Sure, he could find somewhere to run off to, but it was always a shot in the dark with how his father was going to act. Some days he could escape without his dad noticing a thing, but other days that was just not possible. And unfortunately, that was today.
