“Sing what you did at that party last night!” Somehow, he could practically hear Duke smile from behind the camera; speckled cheeks raising with his dorky grin, his dimples on full display as he giggled under his breath.
Becky and Tom rolled their eyes playfully in sync, but obliged anyway. “Just a small town girl, livin’ in a lonely world.” Becky started. Tom joined eventually, and it became a duet. If you listened close enough you could hear Duke occasionally laugh or hum along, tapping his fingers on the camera to the beat.
He went back to his workstation as the video kept playing in the corner. He occasionally hummed along to his and Becky’s own singing. He had always been fond of singing, he was in a couple musicals in middle school, and he took choir in high school. He would always make up love songs to sing to Becky, or sing already existing ones—he also was pretty good on the guitar, keyword ‘was’. He hadn’t practiced in years.

Becky sighs, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket at the kitchen window, watching the scene outside with a fond but frustrated smile, sniffling miserably. Tom lifting Hannah onto his shoulders while Lex pelts them both with snowballs—his laughter echoing through the glass.
"They’re gonna catch my cold next if they stay out there much longer," She muttered to herself, "Tom Houston, you are not carrying her through three feet of snow in sneakers—oh my god.”
Tom and the girls were oblivious to Becky's worried eyes, caught up in their snowball fight. Hannah squeals gleefully, perched on Tom's shoulders like a little queen, while Lex dives for cover behind a snowman with a mischievous grin. The scene outside was like something out of a Christmas movie—but inside, Becky was wrestling with her own worries.

Richie bolted down the corridor to get to the music room. Ruth followed him down, repeatedly insisting that there must be some kind of mistake. Overtaking him, Ruth slammed into the music room door, stumbling forward and tripping over herself when it opened quicker than she expected. She didn't bother pulling herself back up and just laid there instead. Miss Mulberry looked unfazed. She was sitting on her desk with a coffee in hand. Richie stepped over Ruth and Miss Mulberry shushed him before he even spoke.
“No, there are no mistakes on the cast list.” She droned, taking a sip of her coffee. She looked utterly fed up. “I am just as annoyed as you are.”
“Why.” Was all Richie could muster. Ruth groaned from the floor.
“As a detention alternative, apparently. Principal Blim thinks making our lives hell will cure Max of his anger issues.”
“I don't think you're allowed to say that, Miss Mulberry.” Ruth mumbled, her voice muffled by the floor her head was still pressed against.
“Ruth, you know I'm not paid nearly enough to care.”
