After escaping one tragic circumstance after another, the foster sisters finally found their promised happily ever after somewhere west of everything they'd ever known. California meant big cities, sandy beaches, and the kind of blue sky that didn't feel like it was watching you back. Lex had the wheel. Hannah had the passenger seat and a hollow space where something important used to be. They were going to make it. They were so close to making it. And then they needed groceries.
Omega Mart appeared to be just another typical big-box store from the outside—fluorescent, uninspiring, the kind of place you visit and quickly forget. However, inside, the products had unusual names that didn’t quite make sense, advertisements played on a continuous loop like a surreal dream, and the freezer aisle vibrated with an energy that seemed otherworldly. Hannah noticed these oddities, but Lex did not. Amidst the tattooed rotisserie chickens and the blaring emergency alarms, one sister disappeared completely, leaving the other alone in a store that insisted she had come in by herself. -
