Grace and Karen talked for at least an hour. Karen had brewed the three of them some warm tea, which Grace drank gratefully. Karen took a deep breath, she had to get to her main point. “Grace.” She rested her hand on the teen’s shoulder.
“We’re special.” Karen echoed what the witch had said.
Grace tilted her head, confused. Karen specified. “We’re descendants of Willabella Muckwab, The Muck Witch. Or, the witch from your nightmare. Therefore, we have the gift.”
“We’re what?!” Grace panicked.

“Sing what you did at that party last night!” Somehow, he could practically hear Duke smile from behind the camera; speckled cheeks raising with his dorky grin, his dimples on full display as he giggled under his breath.
Becky and Tom rolled their eyes playfully in sync, but obliged anyway. “Just a small town girl, livin’ in a lonely world.” Becky started. Tom joined eventually, and it became a duet. If you listened close enough you could hear Duke occasionally laugh or hum along, tapping his fingers on the camera to the beat.
He went back to his workstation as the video kept playing in the corner. He occasionally hummed along to his and Becky’s own singing. He had always been fond of singing, he was in a couple musicals in middle school, and he took choir in high school. He would always make up love songs to sing to Becky, or sing already existing ones—he also was pretty good on the guitar, keyword ‘was’. He hadn’t practiced in years.

With as much dignity as he can muster, he turns, meeting its eyes.
Its eyes that he remembers as dark brown, that now shine an eerie electric green.
“Hey there, Johnny,” the thing that was once Wilbur Cross says, face curling in a pleased sneer, dragging its gaze up from where it had clearly been eyeing. “How’s it goin’?”
