    Jiang Cheng lifted his head to meet the soft gaze of the amber.
    "Why?"

    Lan Xichen tilted his head, considering the question.
    "There are three reasons."

    "For one, I would rather not burden the villagers further with the presence of a Sect Leader."

    Jiang Cheng arched his eyebrows but did not say anything.

    Lan Xichen's gaze flicked away for a moment as he said, "Second-"
    "I never realised - I - I never thought that my nearness could bring you harm."

    Now the amber eyes returned and stayed.
    "I would not like to become the source of any harm to you."

    "And the third reason?"
    "Because I want you to."

    It was a well known fact that Sect Leader Yu was a practitioner of powerful magic. It wasn't Demonic Cultivation, but it wasn't natural either. Her abilities were said to be twisted and monstrous. Either way, it didn’t fare well for Jiang Cheng. There was no doubt in his mind that she could literally do anything to him.

    The sound of her footsteps echoed in his ears as she started towards him, crossing the few steps that stood between them. Raising a hand, she reached out to take his face into her hands, forcing him to meet her cold gaze that was so much like his mother’s that it gave him goosebumps.

    “You will give this sect an heir,” she ordered. “If not through a wife, then I will have you bear an heir yourself.”

    Jiang Cheng did not give a lot of thought to his death anymore, far too busy worrying about sect problems and nephew problems and dead brothers coming back to life problems.

    He was absolutely sure of one thing however— it would be his hatred that would kill him in the end.

    And thus, the absolute fucking irony that here he was, choking to death on his love, was un-fucking-believable and typical, really, of the shit-show that had been his life.

    Of course, not even death was going to be easy for him.
