Summary
After reading Rachel Reid’s interview about what’s coming in Unrivaled, I couldn’t stop thinking about the arc she hinted at for Shane — the quiet, inevitable reckoning with aging, identity, and what happens when the game that built you no longer fits the same way.
This is my exploration of that space.
Set a few years into their time with the Ottawa Centaurs — after back-to-back Stanley Cups, after the glory — Shane begins to feel the shift in his body and in himself. He doesn’t know who he is without hockey. Ilya, now both his husband and his captain, sees it long before Shane says it out loud.
A late-night conversation. An end-of-an-era fear. Retirement, legacy, children, and the terrifying question of who are we without the ice?

Summary
After a long night at an award show filled with backhanded compliments and old narratives that refuse to die, Shane and Ilya return home exhausted — but it’s not the cameras or the spotlight that weigh on them most. Lying face-to-face in the quiet of their bedroom, Shane finally says the words he’s been carrying for years: an apology for a world that never treated Ilya kindly, for the loneliness he endured, for the villain they made him into just for surviving.

Summary
Ilya wanted to get up, shake it off, keep playing, score his fucking hat trick. But it felt like his body wasn't his own. Like he was a marionette with its strings caught off. Gravity increased by tenfold it seemed and Ilya was too tired to resist it.
The sword was still in his chest and Ilya could vividly imagine in his head the blood pulling beneath him. But as he looked down there was nothing but white ice all around him.
In his last moments of consciousness, just like every night before falling asleep, Ilya thought of Shane. His lovely shane with his beautiful freckles.
As ilya’s world succumbed to darkness he had just enough time to think “I would take a sword to the chest for him” ,then everything went black and Ilya could no longer feel.***************************************************************
Or, Ilya should have known one day his body wont be able to bear Ilya's awful habits and sad life, he just didnt expect to have a fucking heart attack on the ice.

Shane lifts one eyelid again to look at Rozanov. His eyes are red-rimmed. Like he’s been crying. “Why…why aren’t you in Boston?”
Rozanov’s brow furrows. “Why would I be in Boston?”
“You, you’re captain. Raiders. Boston.”
The room is silent except for the beeping of monitors.
In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.
