Of all the words Dan could’ve chosen, he has no idea why his brain went straight to calling them soulmates while he stands in Phil’s kitchen, wearing that bright green hoodie he stole off the bedroom floor as he watches Phil cook. He doesn’t even believe in souls, and it’s way too intense for nine in the morning.
He absolutely meant it, though. Something about it just feels right. -

It’s the morning of his exam, and Dan isn’t taking it. The excitement he felt last night about finally being free from studying law has faded away now that he has to face the reality of the decision in the morning and what that means for his future. It feels kind of unfair that he’s stuck worrying about uni instead of spending the night out in Tokyo or flying first class to a foreign beach resort, but at least it can’t be all that bad if he’s here making YouTube videos in Manchester, waking up next to Phil as late as he wants with no more exams to worry about.

Unexpectedly, he gets invited to the international piercing conference in Las Vegas, where he not only gets to explore a new city but learn more about the job and how things operate in other places. He also gets to meet new people in the industry, like Dan, a piercer at one of Mikey’s other locations who’s more than happy to show him around his first conference. It’s a whirlwind week in America, and a long flight back home to his quiet apartment.

Birthdays haven’t always been easy for Dan, between the shitty childhood memories and the constant reminders that he’s a year closer to dying. But as he’s gotten older - and a lot happier - birthdays have started to not seem so bad after all. There are still moments where he finds himself back in that old negative mindset, but with his friends and family (and several years of therapy) he’s finally able to enjoy the day for what it is, which is pretty damn great.
