Ah, yeah, the soulmates. True, everyone he’s ever met is waiting to meet theirs. He admits there’s a certain excitement about finding your soulmate, or at the very least, to have your memories brought back upon falling for someone. When he was younger, he was also excited about the possibility of meeting someone like that. A “soulmate.” He used to imagine what his mysterious past life was like every night, and sometimes he and his friends would discuss how they imagined theirs. It has been years since he did any of that, of course.
“I don’t exactly believe in soulmates.” He explains awkwardly, causing Fischl to look at him with a face he can’t quite decipher. “I have never met anyone who’s found theirs, so I started to lose hope.”
“Oh…” She sounds rather disappointed. He didn’t just ruin his first friendship, did he? “I guess… I guess it makes sense. But if you didn’t find them in Liyue, that means fate brought you to Mondstadt to find them! I’m sure. I, Fischl, was put in your path upon the call of fate to help you find your one and only soulmate. How cool is that?”
Or the story in which fate brings Xiao to the city of wind in a world where finding your soulmate gives you your past life's memories back...

Summary
A deal is made between a spy, Agent Alatus, namely Xiao, and a serial killer, V.D., otherwise known as Venti Dei.
The deal was simple. As long as Xiao cooperates with Venti and finds the person that he's after, Xiao may finish his mission by taking Venti's life at the end of the deal.
It's very simple.
So what kind of wrong turns does this "very simple deal" take?
And when will they ever accept that their feelings for each other is more than a form of reluctant comradery and partnership?

when venti first moves in with scaramouche, he tells him: "there are certain things we're predisposed to try to avoid, venti. we’re ruled by an instinctual freudian mess of fear. i have a feeling you'll try to go against it. don't."
for a while, venti doesn't think he'll ever understand what scaramouche means. he tries to live his life as best he can, following a set of emotions he's never quite defined as his own and transcribing the rules of his society’s instincts into actions. and, eventually, venti thinks he can understand a life of running.
until xiao teaches him to hide.
