Summary
Rouge is woken up by the sound of her phone.
She had come home roughly two hours ago, exhausted by a two month recon mission, where she had countless sleepless nights and no comfort. She practically fell into her bed after her bath. Her fur was still damp when she drifted to sleep, the small TV in her room still on.
So naturally, she was curious as to who the fuck was calling her at 3 AM.
Especially because she knows everyone was told that she would be exhausted and tired, and she’s not the nicest when there’s a combo of those two things. She groans as she stretches, her back and neck aching. She must have gone to sleep in a shitty position. It takes her too long to reach and get her phone, the caller not deterring from her inability to answer in a timely manner. Her nails tap the screen as she answers, rubbing her eyes of sleep, and frustration.
“Blue, you better have a damn good reason to be waking me up right now.”
“I know, I’m sorry. But can you check on Shadow?”

Summary
It takes him twenty minutes to gather the courage to actually call him. He suddenly gets courage, then backs out at the last second. He’s being ridiculous, he knows that. Maybe he should text him first, just to see if he’s awake? Yeah, that makes sense. Sonic breathes slowly to ease his anxiety.

He doesn’t get a response, which makes him reconsider saying anything in the first place. Sonic sighs, flopping himself onto his messy bed from where he was sitting upright. His breathing is starting to get erratic, and he’s trying his absolute best to keep himself grounded and not take it personally. He’s taking it personally.
He hears his phone buzz, and he shoots up and hopes it's Shadow responding.

“Miles must have needed you pretty bad, you’re barely ever late.” Sonic laughs nervously, messing with his quills out of embarrassment.
“He was repairing the Tornado, and I guess when I built it back in the day, the propellers were shit. He saw it and asked for help since the parts were super outdated. It was a whole thing.” Sonic explained, shrugging and relaxing back into the chair.
“Why didn’t you ever replace them if they were shit?”
“Well, I thought maybe Tails would get new ones. Maybe it flew over his head.” Sonic waggles his eyebrows at his joke, and Shadow has half a mind to breathe out a puff of air in amusement.
“That was terrible.”
“You’re the one who laughed, man.”

The past week was exhausting, full of bad days and restless nights, filled with awful and gory nightmares. He knew being holed up in the apartment was bound to make it worse, but he didn’t have much to do outside of sit around and complete paperwork. Sonic even reached out a couple of times to check in, which Shadow appreciated. He wasn’t going to tell him that, though.
