Xichen is fairly certain now that he knows what’s going on. Sizhui is twenty, after all. He’s always been a bit of a late bloomer, likely due to years spent malnourished and surrounded by malignant energy, but even for a late bloomer, twenty is late for a first rut or heat. They’d all assumed by now that he was probably a beta, given the lack of a mating cycle, but it seems that they were all wrong.
“Does it itch?”
“Huh?” Sizhui says, absently.
“Does it itch.” Xichen repeats, “Under your skin. Like a sort of crawling sensation, something too deep to scratch?”
Sizhui stares at him for a moment, thinking, and then he nods, “How did you know?”
“Past experience.” Xichen sighs, “Sizhui, you’re presenting. You’re having your first rut."
Lan Sizhui, assumed to be a beta, presents as an alpha. A late bloomer, but definitely an alpha. Lan Xichen probably shouldn't be the one to help him through it, given their relationship and the fact that he is also an alpha, but Sizhui makes it very clear that he doesn't want him to leave.
