Summary
Unlearning the lessons Shigeo had taught himself for five years is quite an undertaking. Uncorking those emotions and being forced to process them is overwhelming, after so long of having relative silence. He thought he’d gotten it down; thought he’d had it. It’s not so hard to laugh.
Dealing with fifteen years of trauma is also quite an undertaking, one that piles atop his carefully recovered shell with a vengeance. And it turns out that, despite his efforts, he’s been doing more harm to himself than good.
And it might just kill him.

Summary
Mark Watney didn't want Vincent Kapoor to make any promises that their romantic entanglement would continue while he was off living his best space-man life. Earth-Mars relationship seemed like a high pressure way to be long-distance with someone who you weren't, technically, meant to be dating.
Vincent didn't agree with Mark's logic, but it was his choice to break up before leaving the planet (and would have given Vincent a great line about his ex leaving him for another planet, if anyone at all knew they had been together).
