“It’s not pathetic,” Will interjects quickly, shaking his head, “It’s not—“
“It is, Will,” he hears Mike’s voice break over another hitched breath, “I know you’re… I just want you to be happy. I never want you to come back to Hawkins, but I’m fucking selfish. I’m so selfish, and I’m sorry.”
Will lets the tears spill over and he lets that want that’s always itching under his skin show itself.
“My whole life I’ve missed you every second you’ve been away from me,” Will confesses quietly into the receiver.
If you’re pathetic, I’m wretched.

Not long after the final battle, Mike and Will were inseparable– until Will moved out to New York.
Despite the weekly calls and the freedom of living their lives without terror, there’s no world in which they could last so long apart without it feeling like torture.
Will gets a call, and three days later, Mike is at his doorstep.
It only takes a day for them to fall back together again.

Just as he was about to leave the living room, he heard Mike call after him.
“Will! One question! Does your notebook say what the protocol is for jerking off? How much notice do I have to give?”
“Asshole!” Will shouted from the hallway. Mike’s laughter was the last thing he heard before closing his bedroom door.

Will finally makes eye contact with him again, a smile playing on his lips. Mike’s eyes dart down to them for a split second, then back up. “Okay.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. I mean, whatever, right? We live together, for God’s sake, and we’ve known each other forever. Who cares if we have to hold hands for three days, too?”
“Exactly,” Mike says too quickly. As stupid as Robin’s plan had sounded when she’d proposed it, now that things were falling into place he found himself eager to get it underway. Treat Will like royalty. Easy.***
Three whole days Will’s heart hasn’t known whether to swell or break or rupture like his appendix. But he’s being discharged tomorrow, so it won’t be an issue for much longer, so for now he just pretends that the hand on his arm wants to be there. Because Will Byers-Hopper has never been chosen on purpose, and until tomorrow, he can pretend that this arrangement didn’t come about under duress.
OR:
New York City, October, 1989. Things have been better since Will moved away from Hawkins and Mike followed him. Until Will's appendix bursts and, in the chaos of getting him to the hospital and finding a medical proxy, Mike accidentally tells the doctors he's his boyfriend.

Mike had always believed that the moment he’d die, no matter how brutal, he’d feel calm. At peace. A moment of acceptance that this was as far as his story would go. A quiet thing, just for himself, where he’d remember his most precious memories. His most memorable campaigns, sneaking into the movies and sharing popcorn… a blue-and-yellow swingset. He’d seen it in movies, he’d read about it in comics.
Only now that he’d reached this moment, there were so many feelings overflowing, bursting through him like a punch to the gut. It left him completely paralyzed. Horrible fear, grief, pain, and the most intense regret he’d ever felt in his life.
OR: The continuation of the Season 5 Volume 1 Mid-Series Finale starring: Mike's POV, Mike being jealous of Robin, Will dealing with his powers and his newfound confidence, Mike overwhelmed (in the best way) by said newfound confidence, flirty but shy Byler, nerdy flirting, churchgate, and just generally ALL the Byler scenes I wanted to see happen in Vol 2 and 3 (we were robbed).
