Summary
“Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns.
“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”
“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”
“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.
---
Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

Summary
He’s in the kitchen with the wives, though even the wives were there too, and the 118 are crowded together, stuffed onto a couch that doesn’t fit four, closer than they’ve ever been in more ways than anyone will be able to name.
Not for the first time in his life, Eddie stands on the outside looking in. He can’t have this again, this family that he fell into - it’s a flash in the pan, lightning in a bottle. His new crew waits for him back in El Paso, a new collection of strangers he can't let himself get close to.
Buck looks up and around, catching Eddie’s eyes when he finds where Eddie has gone. He moves his arm to the back of the couch, fingers reaching out in what looks like an invitation. Eddie stands in the kitchen and begs himself - take it, take it, take it.
[Or coming together and coming apart in the days surrounding Bobby's funeral.]

Summary
Buck breathes with exacting calm, trying to imitate the deep, slow inhales of sleep. Eddie’s voice is so quiet and there’s a hint of tequila curling around Buck’s cheek and the hand on his hip has three fingers slipped below the hem of his shirt. Branding his skin. Keeping him. Please, god, keep him.

Summary
“I’m not scared of it,” Buck said, watching another flash of lightning as it strobed in the sky.
Eddie didn’t think he was. He had every right to be, but Eddie didn’t think he was.
“I didn’t—it’s not that I couldn’t be alone,” Buck explained, pausing to find the right words. “I just. Wanted to be here.”
Eddie gazed at Buck—refused to look away, in case Buck needed to see him, too. He said, “Then I’m glad you’re here.”
Eddie and Buck experience their first thunderstorm together following the events of season six.

Summary
“Excuse me,” a distant voice says next to them, “you’re standing right in front of the flour.”
The person sounds a little annoyed. Buck almost doesn’t hear them, with his ears ringing and all; with the taste of Eddie’s spit on his lips. Maybe it’s his nine years of being a first responder that gave him the situational awareness he needed to even notice them at all, considering.

Summary
Buck exhales, holding a sob back. His hand shakes over his mouth, and Eddie stays silent. “I used to be homeless, you know.” He sniffs, shaking his head. He can feel Eddie’s gaze on him. “But, Eddie—I can’t be that brave again. I don’t wanna stay at another homeless shelter and get kicked out in the afternoons and go to church because I have no where else to stay and at least they have heating.
“I just—I need this. I need to stay. Here. I need to stay here, and you need to say that’s okay, because I’m not strong enough to handle that again. ‘M not.”
or: Eddie comes back from Texas, and Buck starts to feel weird about living in his house. For more than one reason.

Summary
“I’ll do it,” Eddie repeats, looking at Buck in one of those silent conversation ways again, but Buck actually can’t figure out what he’s trying to say this time. It messes with his brain, until Eddie speaks again, “I’ll pretend to only be a little offended none of you have thought to ask me before, but Buck, I’ve fixed a lot of cars. I can look at yours.”
(or, the check engine light comes on in Buck's Jeep, Eddie volunteers to fix it and carpool with him in the meantime, and it all breaks down from there, literally and metaphorically)

“Didn’t know you were seeing someone.”
Buck just laughs. Like, honest to god giggles. Eddie is stuck fighting off doubly massive waves of butterflies and confusion, all while Buck just gazes down at him.

Summary
There's another silence, a brief one. Eddie's stomach swoops like he's in freefall. Then Buck says, even lower, "What would you do? If you were here?"
Eddie breathes in, sharp. He feels like he's standing on the edge of a cliff, the sheer drop as inviting as it is terrifying. L'appel du vide, the call of the void. There have been studies on it; he's pretty sure Buck is the one who told him that. The urge, in a high place, to jump.

“How are we gonna practice dating if we can't even take the first step?”
Three hours later, when he was lying in bed staring up at the ceiling, Eddie would not be able to pinpoint with any certainty what possessed him to say what he said next. All he knew was that at the time, it seemed like the perfect answer, the obvious solution.
“We practice on each other.”

Summary
Eddie has to laugh at this point, because this isn't just about Tommy completely disregarding the general audience commentary on how harmful Gardner's books are. This is about him not caring about Buck's interests even a tiny bit.
Eddie would be lying if he said he's a hundred percent into everything Buck tells him, but he has never—not once—not listened to what he has to say.
Setting down his beer and turning towards Tommy, Eddie glares, his mouth twitching. "Doesn't take away the fact that he's still very much openly hating on women for most of them."
A beat of silence, "I take it you've read him, then."
There is a taunting tone in his voice that Eddie can't quite ignore. He forces himself to smile, breathes in through the nose, "Wasn't interested in reading him after Buck explained in painful detail why I shouldn't."

Summary
He’s still greedy, even now. Still can’t figure out how to loosen his grip on it just a little, knuckles white with how hard he’s holding on, but he’s trying so hard to give Eddie space and time because he asked for it, because when they got together, Eddie couldn’t seem to stop looking at him when he asked Buck to be patient with him, couldn’t hide the nerves from his voice, the vulnerability of his open chest, the honesty in his fingers against Buck’s wrist where he’d held on so gently as if he was afraid to come any closer. So Buck is trying, to just sink into having it rather than wanting more, to let it be enough rather than him being too much, and he’s been doing good, mostly. He’s been doing good.
-
Or asking for what you want is asking too much of Buck, except it isn’t really. Not when it’s Eddie.

God, he misses Eddie.
Buck chokes on it. Everything about Marie, every mark she has left on him, washes away. All of it, all of the good and fun he buried himself in, that he set himself free with, is replaced. By Eddie. By the missing him. By the wanting him.
Instead of Marie’s lipstick and spit in his mouth, all he can taste is Eddie. All he knows is Eddie. All he wants is Eddie.

Summary
The guy’s hand drops to Buck’s waist and grips it—tight.
Eddie doesn’t mean to say anything. Honestly. He’s planning on standing there like a sane person, drinking his beer, minding his own business.
But that hand stays exactly where it shouldn’t, and Buck laughs like he doesn’t feel it, and the words slip out before Eddie even knows he’s opened his mouth.
“Oh fuck no.”
Or,
After Buck's friend bails on him, he invites Eddie to come with him to a themed event at a bar - a gay bar, as it turns out. After watching Buck flirt all night, Eddie takes matters into his own hands and shows Buck who he really belongs to.Bookmarked by soundsshiny
