    literally SUCH a funny concept and tbh kinda feels more realistic than those "avoiding hakoda because of dad trauma" fics. those fics tend to baby zuko a lit bit, portraying him as like panicking at the mere presence of a dad when he canonically stands up to his dad and never seems scared of any other dad figures. him getting his wires crossed between "wants parental approval" & "crush on sokka" and therefore ending up with a crush on hakoda makes sense. it's great. sokka's dad has got me down bad

    This was just Hakoda’s luck, on the run with three children he’d vowed to himself to take to safety—wherever that may be—and they just happened to run into the Dragon of the West.

    Unsheathing the knife—his only weapon, of course he had nothing but a measly knife while facing the Dragon of the West—Hakoda stepped forward to stand between the children and the enemy. Like he should have when they’d come to the South Pole and threatened his family.

    Never give up without a fight. Not that he needed the blade’s inscription to tell him that.

    After escaping from the Western Air Temple, Hakoda is lost in a forest with three Earth Kingdom kids. Thirsty, tired, and struggling to cope with the effects of his prison stay, the last thing he needs is getting kidnapped by an ancient secret society.

    But Iroh’s plans to have the Avatar kill the Fire Lord are outrageous, and Hakoda takes issue. Now he has to put up with his mother’s ex and a gloomy firebender while parenting three wayward children, rescuing his crew from prison, and defeating Ozai. Which would be enough to deal with even if the wounds of the past didn’t have a habit of bleeding into the present.

    i love taking two characters who've never met and exploring what their dynamic could be, and these are two absolute icons of minor characters. hama's bloodbending challenges jeong jeong's idealized view of waterbending so it's fascinating to imagine that she was where he gained that reverence in the first place and to see how they both reckon with that

    an absolutely fantastic sokka character study. reckoning with hakoda, reckoning with kya's memory, adjusting to life after the war. have you ever wished a fanfic could exist without you having to write it? that's what this fic is to me. all my rambling posts about sokka and hakoda and plenty of my half-finished fanfics have been trying to capture what this fic captures.
