Miranda swallowed hard.
The question itself wasn't out of place, in fact it was one that she knew would be asked often in upcoming interviews. Still, chocolate doe-eyes appeared in her mind for a split second, and a sharp twinge in her heart quickened her heart rate. The knowledge that she would never see them again weighed heavily on her, but she did her best to push those thoughts to the back of her mind. The last thing she needed now was another nervous breakdown and a wave of tears.

Miranda studied the tie closest to Nigel’s wrist, a patternless option in tangerine. She picked it up and beckoned Andrea over with a bend of one finger. Once close enough, she draped the tie over her assistant's left shoulder to compare it against the large apricot-toned hibiscus on the print of her blouse. It was exactly the color she was looking for, and as Miranda smoothed the fabric with her hand, she could feel Andrea’s heart thundering beneath her palm. A pink blush crept up her chest and neck, and as it made its way to her cheeks, Miranda silently admired how lovely the hue was there.

Andy returns and at first everything is as it seems but, with each passing day at her work back at Runway Miranda is acting weirder and weirder.
Andy throws caution to the wind and decides to figure out what Miranda could possibly be hiding. But what Andy doesn’t realise is that Miranda’s secret is more devastating than she or anyone could ever imagine.

She guided Andrea’s blazing gaze with her hand, sliding it all the way down to the hanging belt, and then moved upward, pressing the thin layers of the clothing beneath to lift the hem of her already short négligée a few precious inches. Miranda closed her eyes and hummed in satisfaction. “The way they feel against my skin is, well…”
“What?” Andrea asked, her voice hoarse. “What do they feel like?”

Miranda struggles with her own mental well being while trying to keep her relationships with her daughters alive and continue running American Runway. Whilst Andrea on the other hand has had her career skyrocket with success and Miranda can’t help but wonder if that silly former assistant even remembers her.

They say, when your personal life goes up in smoke it’s time for a promotion, but when Caroline and Cassidy die in a car crash Miranda’s life simply falls apart. She starts smoking again, after she had quit just when she learned, that she was pregnant with the twins. Then she quits a second time, only to pick it up again. She works herself into the ground, before seeking professional help. From the beginning of January 2013 she becomes a regular in Dr. Sachs’s practice – at first thrice a week, slowly fighting herself back to life. This short story is set several years after the twins tragic death, when Miranda finally decides to sell the townhouse, and with it a place too full of memories to be habitable.
