Summary
“Is there something you’d like to see?” he asks, breathlessly teasing.
“Yes,” Wordie says, unable to lie to him, to hold false pretenses. It’s wonderfully freeing.

Wordie thought it would feel more so, truly. Instead, he feels rapturous, glorious. Intensely erotic, to be sure, but something about this moment feels perfectly holy.

Macklin is in it, reclining, writing in his diary. And there, curled against him, beneath Macklin’s blanket, is Hussey. He isn’t even looking at Wordie now. He’s got his face pressed into Macklin’s ribs, a smile playing at the corner of his mouth, his eyes closed. His hair, growing in again now since they all shaved their heads in May, is tousled and sticking up at odd angles. Beneath the blanket, Wordie can tell he has one leg hitched up over Macklin’s waist. He looks very comfortable, and very pleased with himself.
“Ah,” Macklin says. “Jock.”
Immediately, Hussey’s head snaps up, his eyes wide. “Oh, fuck,” he says.

Summary
“Did you need the table?” Hussey asks, glancing at the paper in Wordie’s hands.
Wordie clutches it tighter. “No, I. Wanted to speak with you.”
Hussey feels so startled he thinks his heart skips a beat. “With me?”
“Yes,” Wordie says. The lighting is poor, but Hussey thinks his ears are very red.
“Oh. Well, I’m…rather in the bath.”

Wordie sighs, and consults his sheet of paper, turning it to the lamp briefly to read what’s written there. “I really…desperately wish you weren’t in the bath.”

He tips Hussey’s face up towards him, and bends until their lips just barely touch. He feels Hussey’s shaky exhale, and whispers, “I missed you.”
“Oh,” Hussey says, his voice very small.

“Mack,” Hussey repeats, more insistently.
“What,” Macklin says.
“The skipper just kissed you,” Hussey whispers furiously. “On the mouth.”

Macklin crosses his arms across his chest and leans back in his chair, mouth sealed. But he can still see Hussey’s sad, pleading little face in his periphery, and damn if that doesn’t always work on him. Damn him. “I didn’t… I wasn’t sure if it would go anywhere. Or…last.”
For a moment, Hussey is quiet, clearly thinking about that. And then, in a voice he tends to reserve for his rare moments of sincerity, a forced sort of casualness not at all like his natural cheer, he says, “Seems like a lasting sort of thing.”
Mack blows out a short breath, feeling a bit of warmth seep through the crushing weight of embarrassment. “Yes,” he says quietly.

Bookmarker's Notes
By December he thought he might have found something of a brother in Clark if he only knew where to look. It disturbed him at times, to know so intimately the body of a man whom he would hardly call an acquaintance. It was easy to be with Clark and altogether harder to know him.

Suddenly Macklin appeared before his eyes, peering down at him with a thoughtful, terribly handsome frown.
Worsley was greatly pleased at the sight of him, and not only for aesthetic purposes. Either he was not dead after all, or they both were, and whoever was responsible for sending them on their way had deigned to send them together. Of course the one scenario was preferable to the other, but he would find it difficult to complain in either case.

Macklin continues to do everything in his power not to meet Hussey’s eyes. His ears are red, and he has stubble growing in all over his face, having neglected his razor for a few days. His face is terribly dear to Hussey, after a year together. He thumbs Macklin’s cheek fondly and with his eyes traces the familiar shape of his nose, his mouth hidden under his mustache, the lines between his pinched brows. His heart feels warm, and full, and affectionate. It isn’t the face he’s dreamed about, these past long months, but Hussey does love it, he thinks, and maybe—
He leans in, and presses their mouths together.

Summary
“Such horrid things, such wanton displays, in front of my virginal eyes—”
“Christ, okay, what do you want? Tell me now, before I change my mind and beg the Boss for a cabin reassignment.”
“Would you ask the Boss, really? Or would you go straight to the Skipper—”
“Huss.”
Hussey grins. “Alright, alright. I need you to help me seduce someone.”

“You can’t hoard all of the tender passion on the ship! It’s not right, Mack, and it’s terribly greedy of you.”
“You swore you wouldn’t bring that up. I paid my dues, Huss.”
“I’ve upped the price of your dues,” Hussey says. “You’ve forced my hand, and I have to become wicked and scheming in response to your cruelty and selfishness. And if I have to resort to blackmail, I will.”
“I’ll feed you to my dogs,” Macklin says darkly.
“And I’ll talk about your sordid affair to the last bite,” Hussey says. “I’ll go kicking and screaming about how I saw you, in flagrante delicto—”
“We were fully clothed.”

Bookmarker's Notes
It’s sentiment, in the end—the way he goes all soft at the sight of bright, laughing eyes and warm, smiling lips. Just as sentiment is the cause for his heart’s arrhythmic beat when he slides a hand to the back of Hussey’s skull to hold it steady, the clench in his chest as Hussey sighs, just softly. He rubs the grime from Hussey’s cheeks, revealing his usual fresh complexion, and feels as though his heart is in his throat. His hands feel suddenly too big, too clumsy, for something so sacred. Wordie has big, square hands, good for field work, for writing notes, for dredging and for flipping through scientific tomes. They are not for this, for holding Hussey’s lovely face, feeling the skin warm under his touch. For tenderness. He has not done anything to deserve this, and he certainly was not given permission to enjoy it in such a way.

“It’s—oh—it’s football, I wasn’t using my arms,” Macklin says, voice going unsteady as Worsley’s mouth drops to his collar to suck a quick, hard mark there.
“You were using them plenty, with your sleeves rolled,” Worsley says, sharply, like it was a personal offense. “Christ, I was useless out there for looking at you.”
