”Huaisang forgot to close the door to his canary cage again,” he hears himself say, suddenly, because it is for some reason the one trouble that keeps staying with him. Of all the things to waste his time, that one is the one he hates most. Xue Yang makes an amused noise behind him.
”Did you catch them?”
”Four,” Jin Guangyao says, and it’s a testament to how worn out he is that an absurd pride creeps into his voice. ”The other ones are most likely lost. It serves him right.”
Xue Yang slips down from his position on the shelf and stalks towards him.
”Do you want me to help catch them?” he says, and there’s a foreboding twinkle in his eye Jin Guangyao knows all too well. Xue Yang flicks his wrist and there is a flash of red, a tendril in the air so thin it could be a silk thread and the remaining apple on the table leaps as if speared and topples over in four neatly cut slices. Jin Guangyao regards them for a moment, swapping them in his mind’s eye for the tiny body of one of Nie Huaisang’s yellow birds.
”Another time, perhaps,” he says.
