It's Arthur's idea, and John calls it a phenomenally stupid one as he accepts the small notebook and pen. The first page is blank except for where Arthur has written John Doe, October 1934 in neat cursive. Underneath is a small embellishment that John would have assumed came pre-printed in the book if not for the faint smudging of the ink on the left-hand side. It is the smudge that sets his resolve: He will use it.

It’s snowing again.
It’s becoming something of a recurring joke between Harry and Jean at this point. Every time it snows, Kim is at the window, frowning, furious in his usual understated way. ‘Maybe he thinks if he glares at it enough, the snow will melt away’, Jean had offered. Harry’s not one to join in when it’s at Kim’s expense, but it is, genuinely, so funny how angry he gets. About snow, of all things.

“No,” you tell him, and he blinks at you.
“No?” The way he tilts his head is uncanny. Your hair raises on edge.
“No.” You take out a cigarette and your hands don’t shake. He laughs.
“A very strong opening, don’t you think?”
The metal railing is burning cold under your bare fingers, but you grip it anyway.
“Who are you?” It comes out more afraid than you mean to. You light your cigarette with steady hands. When you turn to look at him he’s standing right next to you. You startle—his footsteps were completely silent. Here, further out onto the light, he looks even more uncanny. Washed out.
“I was going to ask you that! Who I am, that is.” He smiles at you when you squint at him, like none of this is bone-crushing wrong.
“Why would you ask me who you are?” His stare goes vacant for a moment, and you shiver. His eyes are milky-white. Everything about this feels surreal—the lateness of the hour, the cold biting at your fingers. The snow piling in your shoes. Maybe it is just a very vivid dream.
“It just seems like you might know.” He shrugs. “Or, if you don't—I think I might be dead. Do you happen to know anything about that?”

A month after the tribunal, Kim is finally released from the hospital. And learns that Harry has been left in Martinaise, his fate unknown. He resolves to investigate, for this is what RCM officers do, don't they?
"The lieutenant, presumably, would have looked in every corner for a quiet place to die. Somewhere to watch the sun disappear, to keep warm for the night and then shoot himself in the morning as a ‘thank you’ note to the space that had welcomed and sheltered him. The hypothesis was reasonable, correlating with his observations. He had hoped solving the case would prevent any such eventuality. He had thought he would be there to see to it. There was an absurdity at the center of this, a police car driving away as a successful detective watched it cross the bridge and disappear. He couldn’t make sense of it. That was probably where the numbness came from, more Drouamine than an addict would care for, and the Du Bois special: that urge to say something absurdly communist and then shoot a child in the chest.
