    Summary

“I’m right, aren’t I, Signore?” Mozart's hands, enlightened by the liquor simmering in his stomach, took hold of Salieri’s jabot and pulled him impossibly closer. His fingers played with the lace, rubbing it between his fingers with a dirty smile. “You burn for me?”

“It’s a dirty lie!” Salieri grit out, though he remained rooted to the spot. He grasped Mozart’s wrists again, but did not move them from his ruff. “You speak falsehoods.” His words were unconvincing, even to his own ears.

“You are far too handsome to be married to God, Salieri.” Mozart murmured, fingers tracing the frills. His face was almost bashful, lips curled as he looked up at the older composer with darkened eyes. “Tell me, Signore, have you ever engaged in sins of the flesh?”

Salieri, in his old age, tells a stranger the tale of what Mozart had once revealed to him: the story of how Mozart found not only love and loss in Paris but also the preternatural, going hand in hand with his job at the Theatre des Vampires.
