When Jack returns from the biggest win of his life - still shining, still laughing - Nico has already seen the video. Already heard the joke. Already watched the man he loves bask in proximity to power like it’s harmless, like it’s an honor, like it doesn’t say anything about who he is. What follows isn’t a loud fight. It’s worse: a quiet fracture. A packed bag. A key left on a counter.

Summary
There’s something very interesting about being wholly and completely fascinated by someone— it makes you want to see every possible version of them, every thought, every emotion, every gesture, every expression, every translation of impulse into action— and it’s this complete and utter fascination that wins over self-preservation and compels Roisin to turn and make eye contact with Ada. Her face is still impassive, but there’s something there, a wrinkle in her brow, an echo of some worn-out resentment. It’s awful to look at, but Roisin cannot stop looking, and it’s so horrible and so wonderful, because Ada is looking, too— searching, like she is trying to find something, like she is also fascinated by the remnants of pain across Roisin’s face. She wants Ada to kiss her. She wants Ada to hit her.
