And Izuku had gone rabid, he had downright lost his mind, because he was totally okay with being called names and with being belittled; he had dealt with that sort of thing throughout his entire life. He was okay with that, as long as that gruesome villain kept Kacchan’s name out of his filthy mouth.
Izuku had always been like this, even during childhood. Badmouth Kacchan in front of him? Meet his rage, and quite possibly his fists. Maybe that’s just what love is for him. Standing up for someone.
But Kacchan doesn’t love him. Izuku knows that much now. If he did, he wouldn’t have used Izuku to stand up for himself.
Alternatively: Katsuki is in the closet, but he finds out a homophobe is in his pro-hero fanbase. Because of that, he kisses Izuku in front of the man just to make a statement, not aware that Izuku has feelings for him. A lot of trouble ensues.

Summary
All Might told him he couldn't be a hero.
Seven years later, Deku stopped trying to be one.
After the sludge villain incident, Deku disappeared. Most people assumed the worst, and they weren't entirely wrong.
Now he's working as the League's strategist - observing heroes, predicting possibilities, and choosing his moves carefully (most of the time).
He still takes notes, he still watches them, he still wants to understand... but understanding doesn't mean he believes.
