In the cataclysm of the spheres coming together one - and only one - gorgon got pulled through to the continent of the Witchers.
It has been wandering around and encasing people in stone to absorb their life force. Only sometimes it catches people that are a little different.
And it just had to run afoul of Witchers at some point…
