Having been so far removed from the smaller, simpler niceties of life. Something like peace. The word itself feels strange on his tongue. As if it doesn't- shouldn't quite belong.

Marco watches, with a startling attentiveness, the way Jean's expression slowly glazes over. The way it settles from something contemplative to something far beyond either of them.
Marco had seen that look in his eyes before, and in spite of it only having been once, it's a look that had burned into the back of his brain enough for him to feel the effects of it since.
"Marco." Jean whispers beside him, and he'd never loved and feared the sound of his own name more.

That all comes crashing down one morning before school, when he wakes feeling worse than he ever has before. Marco insists on helping him get better. "Don't do that." He whispers, voice sounding soft and genuine as he squeezes the other's shoulder minutely. A gesture that makes Jean's own breath stall in his throat, makes his muscles tense and his heart stumble stupidly in his chest. It doesn't help that Marco's close enough that Jean can pick up his familiar fragrance of pine trees and sweet vanilla.
"Don't do what?" He manages to say back, rolling his shoulders a little in hopes that gentle hand will pull away. But all he gets is another reassuring squeeze as Marco leans in enough to nudge that shoulder with his own.
"Don't pretend with me...and don't act like I shouldn't care."
Jean and Marco obliviously pining after each other in the military police.

Jean and Marco get paired up for a friendly (maybe slightly heart-breaking) round of marbles and an unexpected twist in the game might just end in a little bit of confusion and a LOT OF pain and maybe a touch of romance and comedy but considering this is a crossover between two of the most depressing tv shows on the planet probably not a lot
