Emily, without hesitation, had pulled a bobby pin from JJ’s hair and knelt down at the lock like she’d been waiting for this moment all of her life. She looked up at her, eyes bright, and said, “Told you I was built for a life of crime.”
JJ had laughed so hard she choked on the rain.
God, she’d forgotten how good it feels to laugh with Emily. It’s like warming your hands on a stove you thought was broken.
She says, “I have tea at home. And Henry was asking for you. You could—”
Emily cuts in gently, a small smile playing on her lips. “You know I will, Jayj.”
