Mai attempts to cheer Zuko up, and ends up telling him a bit about her own family situation, a topic that has not come up before during their little chats.

It's funny how you notice the absence of something. How you notice something only when it is gone from you.
How you notice the lack of air when you can't breathe anymore—
“For what?” he asks regardless. Her drawing up her walls and keeping him out hurts—but he doesn't even know where—and how—to begin addressing that. And as much as he knows her, which, these past days have revealed was not a lot—he thinks she's the same way. Conversations were always difficult for them.
But this is important.
So he sticks to what she's already stumbled her way into saying.
“I'd have come with you,” she says. “If you had asked. But I didn't think Ty Lee would come through for me either. So I can't really blame you for thinking the same of me.”

Zuko attempts to break Mai out of Boiling Rock.

Zuko sneaked into Ukano's estate, trying to apologize to Mai for shoving her down the fountain. Mai pinned him to the wall. But instead of feeling scared, he was amazed and asked her to teach him knife-throwing. Who would have guessed that a knife-throwing lesson could be more than knives and throws?
Well... we all agree that Mai and Zuko had a crush on each other when they were small, but no one knows exactly when. In the flashback in the "Zuko alone" episode, it seems like Mai already had a crush on him but he didn't. So I wondered. When did he fall for her? Also, why didn't he apologize for accidentally pushing her into the fountain? And bam! This idea came to my mind.
