“Okay, okay, I see you, Wheeler.” Max grins, and though he’s blushing, Mike smiles back. “So, who is he? What does he look like? Where did you meet him?”

“Jesus Christ, you’re as bad as Nancy and my mom,” Mike groans, rolling his eyes. “I’d also like to point out that I’m not dating him yet, and I have no idea if he even likes guys. But Max, he is quite literally the most gorgeous person I have ever seen in my life. Like holy fuck, he’s pretty. And he’s nice and funny, and I saw him reading that book series I was telling you about the other week, and holy shit, I want to kiss him so badly—”

    “... Will.”

“Okay, sure, yeah. What about him?”

“I’m a bad friend.” Mike admitted, breathing it out like a vomited confession, like something he was desperate to be rid of.

    “Did something happen?” Steve asked.

“Yes.” He paused. “Well, no. It’s— it’s more like… more like… he got a boyfriend.” Mike huffed out a breath.

“I know.” Steve agreed slowly, brows raised. “Carlton. Will, Robin and I met up a while back and he introduced us. Seems like a good kid. What about him?”

Mike felt like a fucking idiot.

Of course Steve didn’t get it. Why would Steve get it?

“I… I just…” How was Mike even meant to begin to talk about this? “It’s driving me crazy, man. I hate the guy.”

Mike spirals about his feelings, gets in his car, and somehow ends up going to Steve Harrington for help. He gets a much-needed pep talk and finally goes after what he wants.

Mike stands outside the door, ready to finally spew his feelings. He stared at the floor, unsure if they would all tumble out of his mouth before the door even opened. He perks up, hearing a quiet shuffle through the apartment door.

The door opened, revealing a slightly more toned and tanner version of the boy Mike had remembered. The boy's eyes dropped, his eyes taking a second to linger over the slender frame that stood before him. "Mike," he whispered faintly, "what.. what are you doing? Please tell me it's you..." His voice becomes tenser, jaw clenching ever so slightly as if he was skeptical that the Mike Wheeler in front of him was a facade.

Mike grabbed the side of his jeans, fiddling with the hem as he started to regret ever coming here in the first place. A moment of silence filled the space between them as Mike tried to collect his words. "I- I need you.. I need to talk to you." He finally breathes out.

Or: Mike Wheeler has finally confronted his feelings, but what happens when Will’s boyfriend stands in the way?

    Summary

He remembers, eyes squeezed shut against the swell of nausea and vertigo that claws through him, being not-quite-thirteen, and listening eagerly to Mr. Clarke explain the science behind dreams.

“Dreams,” he’d said, “are often seen as these sacred experiences, something that has to have a deeper meaning. We have centuries of examples of dream interpretation, the art of examining commonalities between different dreams to find a single interpretation.”

“The thing is,” he’d continued, “dreams are just your brain’s way of processing and regurgitating information; a fruit-salad of information, so-to-speak. Sure, it can mean something, but it’s more likely to be a random grab-bag of facts and feelings that you’ve come across in life.”

A fruit-salad of information. Here, in the dark bathroom at a little past three in the morning, Mike breathes carefully, and tries to dissect where the supposed ingredients of his fucked-up dream salad actually came from.
