She was about to dig in when she accidentally overheard the table next to her.
“Hey did you guys see? Beatrice Young got engaged,”
Ava’s finger twitched.
“Who the hell is Beatrice Young?”
“You don’t know who Beatrice Young is? CEO of TY Corp and basically all its subsidiaries, Forbes 30 under 30, number 1 bachelorette for 3 years running?”
“Well, she ain’t a bachelorette no more huh?”
Ava immediately went and Googled ‘Beatrice Young’ and found the obscene number of articles covering the engagement, at least the whole first 3 pages were filled with that. She just clicked on the first link and scanned the article fervently, ‘Beatrice Young engaged to Joseph Aden Pierre’, ‘have been said to have been dating for 2 years secretly before deciding to tie the knot’, ‘Pierre is the CEO of Richard-Knox Entertainment and an up-and-rising actor’.
Who the fuck was this JAP dude and why hasn’t Ava heard about him before?

Wasn’t Beatrice a lesbian?

Summary
Beatrice shrugs and runs a finger around the rim of the shot glass, delighted in the way that the woman’s eyes track the movement. Fascinated and enraptured by it.
“I’m not a lady.”
The woman snorts and nods, downing her own shot and reaching for a handful of nuts from a nearby bowl. “Yeah, ‘spose I should’ve guessed.” At Beatrice’s curious look she elaborates, “well with you walkin’ in here with them hips and that gun belt, not to mention the suit because-” She whistles lowly under her breath, “my lord above, you certainly ain’t like no lady I’ve ever met.”

Summary
This was her first night in the city. She’d been forced to move. She had been protecting the same place for several years, had gotten complacent, cocky even. It was to be expected in her line of work, that some people would see her. But they were never supposed to see her change. And it certainly wasn’t supposed to end up on social media, and then the local news, right by her apartment.
She had berated herself for the sloppiness. She was better than that. The only saving grace had been that they hadn’t really seen her. Not the real her, anyway. In the back of her mind, something had nagged at her as she tried to recall herself and realised the mental image was blurry. It had been too long. Her self-identity was flimsy at the best of times, but it had never felt this tenuous. Something needed to change, and so here she was.
