Summary
Mike’s hands were pulling him in before he even had time to process the whole interaction, and somewhere, deep, buried by shame and hurt and fucking hearbreak, 15-year-old Will is standing in an airport, holding a freshly painted picture, about to see his best friend for the first time in a year, and the two Wills merge, and something clanks and clicks and heals, and Will closes his eyes and breathes in shakily, nostrils attacked by the scent of the man in his arms. His fingers dig into Mike’s shirt, a little desperately, more than a bit pathetically.

Four years after leaving Hawkins, Will is back for Max and Lucas's wedding. He has a plan: get drunk, avoid Mike Wheeler as much as he could, and flee as soon as possible back to California.

Summary
When Will disappears again, Mike is desperate to find him, willing to risk everything to bring him back. But as his panic takes over, Lucas pulls him aside and they have a conversation.
“You don’t understand,” he mutters, voice barely above a whisper.
“I understand what it’s like to be so scared you don’t even know what to do with yourself,” Lucas murmurs. “So scared that you want to try everything—even if it’s stupid, even if it’ll get you killed—just to get them back.”
“Trust me Mike…if I knew Max was on the other side of that gate,” Lucas continues, voice thick, “and not just… in a coma, I’d be jumping in, too.”
