“Did you have fun last night watching the stream?” Angel asks, and Aki’s blood runs cold. “I didn’t think it would hurt that much. Like, God, it felt so good at the time, but I got up this morning and I couldn’t walk,” Angel says, deadpan, stirring his noodles.
Aki is going to hell. He’s going to hell right now.
“Please don’t tell Makima,” Aki begs, gaze still resolutely locked on his bowl of ramen.
“Aki, look at me,” he scolds. Aki looks up. “She already knows I do sex work.”
Aki splutters. “She knows?”
“It’s taxable income, Aki. I had to disclose it when I was onboarded,” Angel says calmly, stealing the egg out of Aki’s ramen.
“...Oh,” Aki sits back, dumbfounded.

He wants to have more summers with her, to bring home treasures and journals with his name on them and have his mother exclaim at how fussy he was with his data, his carefully drawn graphs, to proudly display souvenirs in the front room and tell her friends that her darling boy brought those home, isn’t he amazing?
Their people live for three hundred years. Erenville is only twenty five.

Haurchefant laughs, delighted. “You did indeed offer and I would be lying to say I’m not intrigued.” He gets up and tips Estinien’s chin up, running his thumb along the dragoon’s lips, pushing inside. He is rewarded with Estinien sucking at his thumb, his tongue playing along its tip. “Hmm… I dare say this will be sufficient. But let me test him while we talk.”
Aymeric has a lot to thank Haurchefant for. Estinien is the reward.

He was thinking of how he wouldn’t really mind sitting in class at the moment. Not if it meant the occasional brush of a warm, tanned elbow against his, a quirk of lips followed by you have a pencil I can borrow? Riku had lost three pencils, two pens, and a cheap calculator by now, but he didn’t mind.
He didn’t mind lingering as long as he could, methodically placing everything into his bag one by one, just to have a reason to talk a little more. Or pretending to be distracted with his phone, acting as if he had a hundred notifications he could be responding to, as if he had the whole world at his beck and call, just to show he was someone to be wanted, someone to make you stop and stare and think, you’re special.
He’d tuck his hair behind his ear, or ‘forget’ his glasses every time he had that lecture, because he thought maybe he looked better without them, even if 30 minutes into the class a dull, pounding headache thumped at his temples and behind his eyes, thump-thump-thump, matching the melodious rhythm in his heart. And he swore it could be heard by the whole classroom, the sound sweeping into a symphony that said look at me.

Summary
They named it once, twice, three diagnoses, backtracked, turned around, and in the end Vanitas stopped caring what they called it or what it did. All he knew was that it hurt. It always hurt, and nothing ever seemed to help. Some days, he could almost ignore it, even distract himself enough to focus on living a life, but other days it was unbearable, excruciating, driving him to a violent brink where anything at all would be worth it to make it stop. His only saving grace was living with Ventus, who had the heart of a saint.
Ventus had resigned himself to a life of taking care of Vanitas. No, that wasn't right, Ven wanted to be there for his brother. He loved Vanitas. That would never change. Not even when his knees hurt from a night spent scrubbing blood out from tile grout, not even when he couldn't stop counting all their knives, not even when he stared blankly as Vanitas bled words designed to hurt because the pain had become too much. It wasn't Vanitas' fault. It wasn't Ven's fault.
He tried, again and again, to make himself believe this was alright.
And then Sora came back into their life.
