Adaine would never admit it. As much as she loved her friends, loved Jawbone, they wouldn’t understand, not really. But sometimes, when the apartment was quiet and it was only her, awake in her thoughts, she missed it. She couldn’t even admit it to herself, but she missed it.

Adaine’s fingers have been broken, all ten of them. It's an old injury, something that they must have done to her near the beginning, but they look like they were never set back right.
Aelwyn holds Adaine’s left hand in hers and traces a finger tip down her sister's crooked fingers. “Somatic components,” she murmurs. “Can't make a fist like this, huh, Adaine.”
“When the sky begins to bleed, so ends the night,” Adaine whispers. “Let the stars find new homes outside of the sky and walk once more along the broken earth.”
“Darling, are you prophesying the end of the Court of Stars right now?” Aelwyn asks. She holds Adaine's hand very gently. Adaine is in no state to tell her if it hurts when Aelwyn squeezes it. Adaine is in no state to tell her if anything hurts.
