It was a long time coming, really. A very long time. Hawke couldn’t say how long; couldn’t remember a time when Carver wasn’t spitting and biting, clawing at him like he wanted to rip Hawke open and live inside his body. It was a sickening, visceral knowledge, and Carver’s presence had always lived there anyway, nestled deep in his guts like a tumour.

And now it was – this. Always had been this, in some way.

Oh, I’ll tell you a story, Seeker. A story of a man who gave his blood and lost everything, dogged by madness to the grave. A story of a man hounded by ghosts, a man dragged from the mud and churn of the sea, a man who could burn the whole world to ashes. A man so desperate to save the world that he ended up changing it instead.

I’ll tell you, Seeker. It’s what I do best.

    Summary

I turned around to see the Fool standing in the center of the tent, his face bruised. He held himself tightly, though whether it was for comfort or protection, I could not say. His eyes were desperate as they met mine, and I nodded that very instant. “Of course I’ll stay.” I released the tent flap and tied it shut, hoping we would have no more visitors that night. As I did so, I heard rustling behind me. I turned to see him dividing his pallet into two.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” I said without thinking. He looked up at me in confusion. “You just told me you’re cold all the time here. If you give me half your pallet, you’ll freeze to death.”

An triptych of nights in the Elderling Tent, from Aslevjal to the Marketplace. Mind the tags.
