Summary
Twelve years ago, the Vinkus rose up and defied the Wizard’s rule. Their rebellion was put down swiftly and violently to serve as an example for the rest of Oz. In the chaos, the king and queen were killed, and their young son vanished, though everyone with a lick of sense presumed he had died as well.
Now, Elphaba Thropp has just defied the Wizard herself, and she’s turned her broom westward, hoping to find the sparks of a new revolution where the last one failed. Instead, she finds even more trouble when she becomes entangled with a motley band of thieves and their reckless, cavalier, and maddeningly handsome leader whose wanted posters all call him “the Scarecrow.”

Glinda looked like she couldn’t decide between confusion and utter outrage. She crossed her arms. “I don’t know what kind of dreams you’ve been having, dearest, but the press conference is in two hours, so I’d appreciate it very much if you could make yourself presentable!” She stomped out of the room, yanking the door shut behind her.

“Don’t speak,” Fiyero warns him, and Feldspur knows deep in his bones that this is so much worse than he had anticipated when Fiyero had woken him up in the middle of the night to race toward the Emerald City, Madam Morrible’s announcement still ringing in their ears.
Never in twenty six years has Fiyero asked him to be silent, to pretend to be something he isn’t, to keep quiet for the sake and comfort of others.
But now, here, as he brushes his hand down Feldspur’s mane and whispers into his ear, his voice and hands alike trembling in the darkness of the once vibrant Emerald City, he knows that this is it.

Zuko was supposed to die that night, at his father's hands and at the behest of his grandfather.
Ursa was supposed to vanish that night, and take nothing with her but her name.
Things didn't exactly go to plan.
OR: spirited away from the fire nation by their mother and abandoned to a life of poverty and running, zuko and azula learn to manage. right until the avatar and his friends drop way too cheerfully into their life, and the war returns to them in earnest. a story of hope, hardship and learning to believe in humanity again. zuko wants absolutely nothing to do with it, thank you.
