Alhaitham can’t say for certain why Cyno’s words bothered him. In a way, the sentiment is unsurprising; Cyno is, after all, dutiful to a fault. It makes sense that he puts his work over himself. Even so, Alhaitham wonders what the shape of Cyno’s happiness would be, if he allowed it to take form. If he ever allowed someone like Alhaitham to witness it.

And then he knows nothing at all, and his heart’s caught somewhere between beats, and he thinks this might be what it’s like to drown. He can hear the blood freeze in his head, feel his limbs lock into place, eyes forgetting to blink. They’re absolutely still, and Shouto doesn’t speak what feels like an interminably long time.
