Summary
The Survey Corps still exists to some degree, even if unofficially. Reiner understands this, understands that by virtue of who he is, he must remain separate from it. Even devoid of titans, there are places on the island where Jean is sent to that he is not permitted to follow. For all his apprehension, for the frissions that prick at his nerves and leave him feeling restless, Reiner stays behind without a word, makes a good show of his terse acceptance — until he is left alone. He sleeps sparsely, fills his idle time with anything that can keep him busy, because he knows that there are a million ways a man can die in this world.
Jean, miraculously, somehow manages to sidestep them all.

The words landed like a match to kindling, setting something deep within Dennis aflame.
Then the moment had passed. Robby had loosened his grip, smoothed apologetic palms over tender flesh. The possessiveness had retreated behind the worship, slinking back into whatever cage Robby keeps it in, and Dennis had been left burning for something he couldn't name.
He has a name for it now. Knows exactly what lives under Robby's careful devotion, what paces behind the bars of his restraint. Has learned that there's something feral and fetid underneath the good doctor's careful composure.
He wants to see it again.
Wants to haul it to the light and make Robby look at it.
Yes, he knows now what lives under Robby's careful devotion. The hunger of it, teeth craving flesh and bone.
