Late at night, Kristoph gets a phone call from his little brother, but when he picks up, it isn't Klavier on the other end. It's his bandmate, Daryan Crescend; he's saying that Klavier is in a bad way, and he's begging for his brother.
There's no question about it. Of course Kristoph is going to do his duty.

“I’m calling regarding Prosecutor Gavin. I understand you two work very closely together, so I figured you might know something.”
Klavier? Was something wrong? Apollo couldn’t ignore that this wasn’t sitting right with him already.
“Uh, yeah, what about him? Is something wrong?”
“That’s the problem; I’m not entirely sure. See, he just handed in a letter of resignation that is effective immediately.”
...And the one time someone didn't.

Apollo is beside himself with grief.
What nobody ever mentions about loss is that it’s not a group activity, no matter how many people offer platitudes of sympathy. Loss is deeply personal, horribly isolating, and above all, uniquely painful in a way that words can rarely describe.
(Or, five dinners Apollo has alone in the wake of Clay's death, and one where he has company.)
