There is a deepness to Lan Wangji’s voice that reverberates through Wei Ying, back pressed to a rumbling chest. His legs tremble, and he closes his eyes for a moment. Water beads on his eyelashes. “I’m not,” he breathes out.
Abruptly, Wei Ying remembers what happened to all the townspeople who entered the forest.

Summary
Wangxian in love in modernity.
Their love story is cinematic—painted in broad strokes within the conventions of the romance (horror) genre. Childhood friends, Wei Ying will crow to his rapt audience (Lan Zhan will think quietly to himself). Neighbors that grew up together and attended all of the same schools until Wei Ying got kicked out of Cloud Recesses Prep. And then, the sad (unbearable) distance of a few years spent apart as they grew into themselves away from (towards) each other and their families. A coincidental (engineered) reunion at a café (Wei Ying’s favorite), their hands curled around steaming mugs of tea and the detritus of too many sweets on their table.

Uncle is not an entirely lonely man, but there is certainly an emptiness by his side that needs filling. He needs more than a friend after all these years, and well, Uncle is rather stubborn about change. He has never liked change, too content with the structure of the Cloud Recesses to fathom living outside of it. The rules keep him company in place of a human companion. This, of course, raises the question of who is fit for his uncle.
