Summary
Eddie can smell the lime on Buck’s breath if he leans in close enough, and he lets himself wonder if Buck can smell it on his. He wonders if Buck would even notice such a thing.
Much more relevant to the matter at hand is that Eddie doesn’t have any reason to be leaning in close enough to smell the long-gone lime in the first place. He forcefully reminds himself of this fact and makes an effort to turn towards Karen on his other side, to actively listen to what she’s saying about the current question.
“Y’all would know Chappell if you heard her, I swear on my lesbian card.”
Eddie briefly wonders how one even acquires an official lesbian card, before realizing Karen is joking. Probably.
That tequila may have gone straight to his head.

Buck sighs so hard that Eddie can almost feel it even though there’s easily half a couch cushion worth of space between them. “Yeah, just. I need to sit with it for a little bit longer.”
Eddie doesn’t point out the fact that they already sat in silence for easily five minutes before. Because even 300 seconds feels like a lot when your best friend is sitting next to you looking cryptically sad after showing up at your house with a six-pack and ignoring the fact that you’re pantsless, sweaty, and out of breath.
“Can you talk first? Maybe about the Tom Cruise thing?”

Summary
There was a correlation between how short Eddie’s responses were and the darkness of the bags under his eyes.
Frankly, Buck wouldn’t be sleeping either if his parents had swooped in and taken away the most important person in the world to him. Hell, he’s kinda been in fight/flight/freeze mode himself since Chris left, and Chris isn’t even technically his kid. In practice, of course, is different. But ultimately he doesn’t feel like he has the right to grieve the way Eddie is. And worse, he doesn’t know how to help and not risk making it worse.
Until he has the forced realization that it’s as bad as he can let it get without doing something, anything.
Said realization is forced by Eddie collapsing on the job.

“It’s like there’s something wrong with me and— and it’s contagious and I hurt everyone around me with it. And then at the end of the day, I’m just supposed to go back to our house, our silent house, alone. And not obsess over what he’s doing, how he’s feeling, everything I’m missing.”
Buck’s heart absolutely breaks at that. He wants to help in some way, any way, and remembers Eddie begging him to just talk to Chris, comfort him, even if he can’t fix everything, after the Kim incident. He wishes he could be there for Chris right now.
And Buck wishes so hard he could be there for Eddie in a deeper way than being an occasional shoulder to cry on. He’d do anything to help him right now.

yes this is a song fic. yes it is closer by the chainsmokers. no i'm not a huge fan of it/them but let's go with it. inspired by the fact that i'm also a wwdits fan and the lyrics have grown on me in relation to that show so thought i'd try them here for some of my other favorite boys. also i haven't written any fanfic since 2016 on wattpad so this should be interesting.
