Four whimpers in fear, 'I'm scared.'
I play with my necklace trying to bury my anxiety down deeper. "I know, me too." I mumble to my reflection, "But, if we make ourselves big enough, they can't secret us away. I'm not smart enough or skilled enough to try a different way."
I adjust my wig, and tense further when someone knocks and shouts a five-minute warning at me.
'What if you're wrong?' Four can't help but worry about Papa finding them.
I nod at my reflection and stand tall. One deep breath later and I strut through the door and towards the shouts and screams. "That's why I chose the name Protea. If I'm wrong, we'll find another way to defy that asshole."
