    The boys have very different reactions to learning about each other's scars.

    Edwin:
    The scars make up everything Charles was before, everything he is today, as intrinsically linked to him as his cricket bat, and because of that, Edwin treats them as if they’re sacred.

    Charles:
    Charles quickly learns that he hates Edwin’s scars because not a single one of them was caused by Edwin himself; every scar on his body was caused by someone who wanted to hurt him intentionally and that alone is enough to make him feel like he’s swallowed glass.

    Or: Edwin fell “first.” Charles falls screaming, bleeding, crawling, scratching and biting; knees bloody, spitting out teeth, and picking gravel out of his palms. But, like, it’s all fine, really.

    Stepping back into the office, Edwin is met with the hard line of Charles’ back—stiff, Grecian almost. He knew, almost intrinsically, not to speak. Slowly then did Charles turn around, and when he did he looked straight at Edwin and—well—he did not look particularly enthused.

    “You had sex with the Cat King,” Charles says, for it wasn’t a question. He already knew—the cat in question had more or less made sure of that. “You had sex. With the bloody Cat King?” As if it bares repeating.

    Football, Cricket, Basketball, Rugby - he threw himself into all of it with a passion like no other, and he was good, very good.

    Playing on Eastfield Community's Sixth Form Rugby team meant Charles, and his teammates, regularly practiced with and competed against local private boys school: St Hilarion's.

    Charles didn't usually pay much attention to the opposing team.
