Summary
This pain became infuriating for the god of death. It meant catching onto Zagreus’ process, but only when that process had come to an end. While he had braced himself against the physical pain, there was the lingering sensation of helplessness when it came to his friend. That helplessness was what drew him back to the bannister overlooking the Styx again and again, a desperate need to see with his own eyes that Zagreus would drag himself out once more.
Perhaps that was why he had gifted the prince the Pierced Butterfly--its powers best invoked when its wearer remained healthy and whole. A reward for staying out of the Styx. A reward for not worrying Thanatos so much.

A newly developed sense of sexual desire is really making it difficult for Thanatos to keep his mind off of Zagreus, and his hands off himself.

Summary
“Let me just—” Thanatos takes a breath. One of his hands, the armored one, grips the handle of his sword. The sound of the armor against the metal of the sword cuts through his words, as though to emphasize them. “Let me just work through this, and perhaps you may help me fill in the blanks. But you’re an Olympic god, you dwell in utter ease in Zeus’s domain, drinking ambrosia all day and doing little else. And one day you realize you can die. And so it becomes a game to you. Meanwhile, I am dragged from my important work to take your soul to the Underworld, which I cannot do because you cannot stay dead, disrupting my duties for the day, and now you want me to drink ambrosia with you. Do I have this right so far?”
Zagreus, a perpetually bored Olympic god, finds some entertainment in dying again and again when he learns that the mysterious Thanatos is always summoned to collect his uncollectable soul.

Thanatos considers calling for Nyx. Surely, Zagreus must be ill, if he’s not only sleeping but thrashing about as if he’s in pain—and Thanatos is a reaper of souls, a dealer of death, not a healer. Yet he spots something from the corner of his eye that gives him pause.
The blanket is tented down at the level of Zagreus’s hips.
Startled, Thanatos simply stares for a moment, until Zagreus’s whimper transforms into a moan, and then comes that voice again. The needy, agonized tone that drew Thanatos to this chamber in the first place. "Than.”

Zagreus overhears a conversation between Thanatos and his father that sets into motion an absolutely disastrous chain of events--because breaking up with Thanatos is definitely for the greater good, right? Right.

He thinks that Than is going to leave after that, as per usual. So when he finds Than waiting for him in the chamber just outside the Elysium arena, he must say that he’s rather surprised. “Than?! What’re you—?”
“If you’re not going to tell me, then I suppose I’ll just have to come out and ask. Why was the fury in your bedroom, holding Mort?” Thanatos does his best to sound completely and utterly detached, but his face has grown more expressive as of late, and Zagreus can see how badly he is hurting.

Summary
For Thanatos, the physical affectations of life are wholly performative; but death incarnate has picked up a couple things, from an innumerable millennia of held breaths, bodies stiffening with fear, hearts that speed with realization and then, slowly, stop. So it is that Thanatos's heart is tight in his chest as he comes upon the trail's conclusion, a figure nearly as pale as the snow onto which he collapsed.
(Zagreus calls Thanatos to join him after he makes it to the surface.)
